Palpating carotid: palpate only one at a time.
- this ensures adequate cerebral flow through the other and thus prevents possible ischemia.
- Avoid exerting too much pressure and massaging the area.
- Ask client to turn head slightly toward the side being examined
Palpating Peripherals: on both sides of the clients body individually, simultaneously and systematically to determine the symmetry of pulse volume.
- if difficulty arises use a Doppler Ultrasound probe
HOW TO PALPATE: USE THE PADS OF THE FINGERS B/C THEIR CONCENTRATION OF NERVE ENDINGS MAKES THEM HIGHLY SENSITIVE TO TACTILE DISCRIMINATION.
NO THUMBS!!!

Study Guide for Exam 1
1. Define and give examples of ethnocentrism.
Ethnocentrism is the thought that one's cultural values and beliefs are superior to those of other cultures. In providing care for clients that have differing cultural beliefs and practices, health care professionals must genuinely explore their own feelings and beliefs and consider how their ethnocentrism may impact the care delivered to clients. An example would be as a health care professional not listening to a client who wants a cultural remedy because you don't believe in it.

Anger speeds up deterioration of lungs: study
LONDON (Reuters) - Lung power normally declines as a person ages but being angry and hostile can speed up the process, researchers said on Thursday.
In a study of 670 men ranging in age from 45 to 86, they found that males who had higher levels of long-standing anger at the start of the eight-year project had significantly poorer lung function at the end of it.
"This study is one of the first to show prospectively that hostility is associated with poorer pulmonary function and more rapid rates of decline among older men," said Dr Rosalind Wright, of Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, in a report online in the journal Thorax.
The scientists used a scoring system to measures the levels of anger of each of the men and they tested their lung power three times during the study.
Even after taking account of other factors such as smoking that can also have an impact on lung power, hostility and anger had a negative effect.
Anger, hostility and stress have also been associated with heart disease, asthma and other ailments.
Wright and her team suggested that the negative emotions could change biological process and may disturb the immune system and cause chronic inflammation.
"Stress-related factors are known to depress the immune function and increase susceptibility to or exacerbate a host of diseases and disorders," said Dr Paul Lehrer, of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, in an editorial in the journal.
He added that it is unknown how chronic anger contributes to physical deterioration but said the researchers established a link between chronic anger and age-related deterioration in lung function.
"The next step is to determine the exact pathway by which this happens," said Lehrer.

Which PDA to Buy
Which PDA do you recommend I should buy? I am looking at the Palm TX or the Palm LifeDrive. The Palm LifeDrive is larger with 4GB of memory and the Palm TX has only 128MB. What do you think is best and why?
Thanks

Blogger Meeting Needed!
We need to get together face to face and have a pow wow over lunch or something. We need to talk about how to keep the blogs active and going after we leave Delta. We need to have cross administrative priviledges to help each other out with tech support, mentoring, CD example helps and continuing invitations to the proper blog as new students slide sideways into our classes (out of sync). We need to get helpful links and email addresses onto a master sheet to handoff to the new semesters so that the helpful sites dont get lost in older blogs.
In other words, we need to talk about our mission, vision and goals!
Dan Oden (2nd sem) has suggested Friday Sept 2nd or the following Tues.
I (4th sem) am doing a 12 on Friday but am available Mon, Wed, Thurs of this week and Tues, Wed and Fri of next week.
Please post here with your availability so that we can all come together at a mutually agreed upon time.

Tracy area folks - study group?
It does not need to be a permanent group at this point, as I know some schedules are still a bit up in the air but I know that I would enjoy having a study group close to home.
I can offer my home as a possible location (2 blocks from Sutter Tracy) or we can meet elsewhere.

Share the Work
You are no longer alone.
There is no grade curve to compete for.
This is a virtual study group blog.
If everyone posts 1 answer to the study guides, you will be sharing the work. Comment on each other's answers. That way everyone will be on the same page. You each have your own unique thoughts. Someone else will always come up with a thought that never occurred to you. Everyone benefits, the learning is easier when it is interactive.
If you are able to explain a concept OUTLOUD to someone else (even if it is your dog), then you have really learned it.
We are being trained to be teachers, start with each other.
Share your clinical stories, hang your reading on what you see and know. Make it personal, it will help with understanding and retention. The more graphic or funny you can make it in your mind, the better.
Here are samples of how the semester ahead of you shared the work and their thoughts.

Sample 2
Sample 3
Sample 4

Great Skills Lab !!!
Just a note to let every one know that our first Skills Lab on Friday was GREAT!! I went in feeling totally nervous and some what intimidated about having to perform all the things that I viewed on the videos and feeling really unprepared even though I had done all the reading and viewing I could possibly handle, but guess what..............IT WAS A WONDERFUL experience!! There is often much humor in what goes on in there hint, those of you that have Richard Sevilla you might consider shaving your legs and making sure your feet are clean and presentable prior to lab..........Just in case you get to meet Ted with your class mates! There were some times we were trying to do a skill on a class mate and ended up in tears......From laughter. We all seemed to walk in mostly not knowing each other and self conscious, and then very quickly wanting to all help each other and laughing along together to get through the reality of knowing yes, you too will be wiping many BUTTS! I really came out of skills Friday with soooooo much more confidence and less nerves and fears about learning all the necessary skills that I need to move on and accomplish to reach my goal. Many of these skills we will be learning are intimidating but I know with the great skills lab set up, we can ALL accomplish our goal. A big Thank You to Richard Sevilla for running such a educational and fun hands on lab session and not making any question seem dumb or "common sense". Did any body else enjoy their skills lab yet??? I must admit, our blog seems pretty lonely.................any body out there?????????????????????

BIG BIG OOPS !!!!!!!!!!
I have been working on giving our test bank a face lift for the past few weeks. I have fixed all of the links, made titles for easy test link ID, rearranged the order and colors, etc.
but then...........
I got so excited and relieved to be finally finished that I accidentally hit the wrong key and deleted the whole bank out the Blog's existence.
Fortunatly, I have been keeping an updated copy on a word doc just in case (I know myself too well), but I do not know how to get it back to that exact moment in time to have all links to the bank still work. So I have reposted it in our January 2005 archives.
NEW TEST BANK
I have attempted to fix all of the recent links to the bank that I can find or have access to, but I can't fix all the links or the bookmarks that some of you may have made. Please let me know if you find any bad links.
Danielle, since I am not an adminstrator to your blog and did not post that first post with the test bank in it, either you or Dan will have to fix the link.
I'm Sorry!
Have a nice day.

However, they are extremely large and take some time to open. The bio file is approximately 115 pgs long. I got stuck the first time. So, I closed it and went into the second file then back into the first. All of the files are large (70-115 pages each) So, be aware!
Problems with Docushare ??
Are any of you having any difficulties opening the new lecture docs that Mrs. Semillio has just added to the nursing 1 file in Docushare??? These are her powerpoint lecture presentations for some of the up coming lectures but I am unable to view them........any feed back or suggestions????????
Thanks

Face lift for the test bank
Attention to all blog administrators, please do not change the posting dates of any tests or quizes. If they are moved to another date or location the link in the Bank will no longer be valid.
I am checking all of the links right now and making the Links easier to read. This is my pre-school goal.

Welcome to Nursing!
I wish all you the best. If you want to see how to get started, go to the 2nd semester's blog and scroll down until you see the archives on the right hand side of their page.
2nd Semester Blog
Click on January 2006. This will put you on their blog at the time when they were right where you are now. There is alot of getting started tips in the first few months of their blog. They will be the closest to you in theory and clinical experiences. You can get help from all of the blogs this way. Every semester the blogs get better because the students before you have laid groundwork down or have added to others. You shouldn't have to keep having the same struggles of finding help. It has already been done. You guys will be able to add stuff far beyond of what we have accomplished so far and will be able to pass it on to the next semester. The only limitations to your learning is yourself, the help is out there for the taking, you just need to use it.
Here is how you can search each blog. At the top of each blog there is a box that says "Search this blog" Say you wanted to find out about PDA stuff, you type in "PDA" in the white space next to the search box and hit search. It will bring up a list of all of the blog posts that have any mention of PDAs in them. This way you can quickly find the information that you need.
These blogs are virtual study groups for the entire class. When you get a study guide, some of you(for example) can type out a few questions and post your findings with the page numbers of where you found your information. That way the study load is shared among many and everyone can comment on the findings and share what they found or think about it. It really helps to compare your thoughts with others to see if you or others are on the right track.
Hey, Good luck.
Enjoy the ride. It goes by way too fast!
